There’s a lot to consider when choosing a diamond—it’s one of the most important purchases you’ll make in your lifetime. That’s why intensive consideration is required. At CBC Fine Jewelers, we take pride in educating our customers on how to pick out the perfect diamond. Here are some of the components you will want to think about:
The 4 Cs of Diamonds. The caliber of a diamond is determined by a set of criteria called the four Cs: cut, clarity, color and carat. When searching for a diamond, it’s important to select one that embodies a balance of all of these characteristics.
Cut – A defined and precise cut creates the diamond’s shimmer. A highly trained expert cutter will be able to shape the diamond so that it captures the maximum amount of light. A successful cut maintains a diamond’s weight, clarity and color.
Color – Nearly every diamond contains a varied spectrum of colors. Most diamonds feature a hue of yellows and light browns. Colorless diamonds are the rarest and most expensive.
Clarity – Diamonds are made of mostly carbon. When the diamond is heated, impurities and other elements appear. These are known as “inclusions,” and they are a result of the diamond being lodged in the ground for hundreds of years. These inclusions give each diamond its own unique appearance.
Carat – Carat weight and size are two different aspects of a diamond. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram or .007 of an ounce. The weight of the carat is a major factor in determining the price of the diamond.
Setting. The tension setting determines the way your diamond is showcased. Choosing a setting is an integral part of picking out a diamond, and there are a wide variety of settings to choose from.
Metal. It’s important to select a metal that reflects the quality of the stone. Gold is one of the most popular bands for diamonds. It contains notes of yellow, rose and white that bring out the subtle hues in your diamond. Silver is a classic and typically more affordable option. Alloy materials like palladium and platinum provide a strong, bold base for your diamond.
There is a lot to think about when selecting a diamond. The cut, shape, materials and quality are all factors that influence the price and caliber of your diamond. CBC Fine Jewelers will guide you through the process to make sure your diamond is a perfect fit.
